The first thing you have to do is to determine if you have
to file a tax return at all. You have to file but that does not
mean you have taxes to pay.
You can get any and all forms via the IRS or around tax time
starting as early as the end of January, you can get your forms
through your local library or post office. You can always file
online too. If you dont want to wait for the paperwork. You can
find some sites that will offer you a way to file, one of the
more popular sites is the H and R Block website. There is also
software such as Turbo Tax that can help you file your taxes
too.
Get all of your information together such as W2's from every
job you have had in that tax year. Write down any deductions
that you may want to file for. There are Child Tax Credit,
education Credit and tax free donations can be made as well to
certain charities. If you have a bank account get the bank
information ready, make sure you are using the right form when
you file because some forms such as the 1040 EZ form will only
allow a certain limit on dividends your account has then you
have to use a different form. It is very important to use the
correct form when filing your taxes because it could make a
difference on getting a refund and owing the federal government
money.
Other deductions available are Textbook credit for college
students, Pension Income amount for retirees. Even Public
transit passes can be claimed as well. There are so many
different deductions that most people dont know about. Do your
research and utilize any and all that you qualify for. Some
people find out about these deductions because they use
accountants to file their taxes for them. But that can be
expensive and that is why people choose to do the work
themselves. They are trying to save money not spend it on
another party to figure out their taxes.
Make sure you answer all of the questions correctly and most
important, check your math. A mistake can turn in your favor
sometimes but most of the time it does not so check and recheck
