How To File Federal Income Tax

Every year on April 15th, millions of American rush to complete their tax returns. But for those people who are new to the working world may not know how to file their federal income tax return.

The first thing you question you should be asking yourself is Do I have to file federal taxes? There is a certain amount of money that you have to make in order to be required to pay taxes. It doesnt matter what type of job you have if you meet the requirements then you must pay. There is also no age limit on paying taxes. If you are a 17 year old teenager and you work part time and you meet the requirement then as a 17 year old you must file taxes.

Once you have determined that you must pay taxes you have to get the proper form. For individuals, there are two types of forms the 1040 and the 1040 EZ form. If you rather you can file your taxes on line at such sites as H and R Block.Com. The information we will discuss still applies.

Determine which form you need and you are ready to begin. Next you need to determine what your filing status is going to be. You can file single, married, divorced or widowed. Figure out your deductions, for some this is where it can get confusing. When you get your W2 at work you have some room to play with your deductions but when you file the federal tax papers you have to claim honestly your deductions.

Gather your W2 that you receive from work in January and this will be your guide, the paper where you get the information you need to complete the forms. When you get to the line on the form you can choose two type of deductions, there are the standard deduction and the itemized deductions. Some people believe they may receive a break if they file itemized but the majority of tax payers choose standard.

Once you have answered the questions and filled in all of the lines, you will come down to the bottom of the page and this will determine whether you owe money or the government owes you. If they owe you money you will receive a check and if you owe they will send you a bill or you can send a check with your return. Attach a copy of the W2 with the paperwork and mail to the proper address.
